Growing in Faith, one Trial at a time.

Faith has been likened to a muscle that grows stronger once it is worked. In the Christian walk, the trials and tribulations are the backbone exercises that will build faith to greater heights. Nobody looks for difficulties, but we often experience the most significant spiritual growth in trying moments. Here is how we can grow in faith one trial at a time.

Embracing Trials as Opportunities

James 1:2-4 says, "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness." Look at the trial as an opportunity, not an obstacle. In each of the trials that we are presented with, we have a chance to lean deeply into God and to see His power and faithfulness.

Trust in the Sovereignty of God

The comfort in this all is knowing that God is sovereign and in control. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Trusting the overarching plan of God even when we do not understand it makes us rest in His care and actually believe that He is working everything for our ultimate good.

Developing Perseverance

They try our ability to endure and teach us how to be patient. They teach us to hold on to God's promises and remain firm in faith. Hebrews 12:1-2 says, ".run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." As we learn perseverance in trials, our faith comes through with a resiliency able to last.

Relying on God's Strength

God's strength is really seen in our weak moments. "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9. We, being aware of our weakness and relying upon God's strength, learn to increase our faith and know that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us - Philippians 4:13.

Seeking God in Prayer

Trials often drive us to our knees in prayer. They deepen our relationship with God as we seek His guidance, comfort, and intervention. This is written in Philippians 4:6-7: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." But it is in the place of prayer where we find peace and draw closer to God, having a close assurance that He will carry us through our trials.

Learning from Biblical Examples

The Bible abounds with stories of those who passed through severe trials and developed in faith. It presents hope and lessons in faithfulness, such as Joseph's betrayal and imprisonment, David's battle and psalms of lament, and the great suffering of Job, along with his restoration. It will help us see, through our study of the accounts, that in no way are we left by ourselves in any kind of a struggle and that God is faithful within and through all circumstances.

Building a Support System

God often relies on the community of believers to come to our rescue during trial. In Galatians 6:2, it is expressed that "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Having fellow Christians who will support us through prayer, encouragement, and walking with us may give our faith the boost it needs during trials.

Reflection on Past Deliverance

This is very important because it gives us the courage to remember how God has delivered us from past tests of faith—where our current challenge is working wonders. Psalm 77:11-12 reads, "I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds." Reflecting on how God has been faithful reminds us that God is ever-present and living among His people, alive and strong.

Growing in Faith Through Worship

Times of trial can then be a great time to worship the Lord. It will take our eyes off our problems and put God's greatness and sovereignty before us. It was said that during Paul and Silas' imprisonment in Acts 16:25, they were singing hymns unto God. Their worship not only fortified their faith but also served as a strong testimony for others. Worship brings before us who God is and reassures us of our trust in Him.

Conclusion

It's a lifelong growth in faith, one test at a time. Every test that comes our way is for increasing the depth of trust in God, knowing His strength, and experiencing His faithfulness. So, while we are navigating the ups and downs of life, may we remember that God is with us, shaping us and growing our faith. May these trials make us emerge even more robust, more resolute, and deeply cemented within our relationship with Him.
